den intersected with the Ethiopian Highlands. It swirled  across Africa and grew into a tropical depression over the Atlantic  on September 6. Over the next several days it gained size and speed  over warm Atlantic waters, twice reaching Category Five status. By September 18, when the hurricane made landfall at Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, it was a Category Two storm with maximum  sustained winds near 85 knots.
