President Girma Wolde-Giorgis

On this date on October 8th, 2001 Ethiopia’s Parliament sworn in its current President Girma Wolde-Giorgis.   Born in 1924, President Wolde-Giorgis was considered a surprise choice, when he was unanimously voted in by the Ethiopian Parliament.  Fluent in numerous Ethiopian languages, most noteably Afan Oromoffia, President Wolde-Giorgis beganhis career in Ethiopian aviation, when he joined the Ethiopian Airforce in 1946.  He was one of the first Ethiopians in the Ethiopian airforce when it was dominated by American technicians. In the early 1950s he recieved training abroad in Sweden and Canada , and returned to Ethiopia where he tried to motivate Ethiopians to join the aviation industry, writing a book on its fundamentals. By the mid 1950s, he assumed the post of Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority and was Board member of the Ethiopian Airlines. During the 1960s, Wolde-Giorgis became a member of parliament and was elected speaker of the parliament for three consecutive years.  In addition, internationally, Wolde-Giorgis is recognized as helping Ethiopia win a seat for the Ethiopian Parliament in the International Parliamentary Union.  These are among the many countless achievements of Ethiopia’s current President Girma Wolde-Giorgis.
