dis Ababa and Awassa. Tumo was born on February 23, 1970 in the Sidama province. Tumo rose to fame winning the Tel Aviv Marathon in 1992 and continues to hold that coarse record. In 1995, Tumo took first place in the Prague Marathon and in 1996 he placed first in both the Houston and Eindhoven marathons. Tumo also represented Ethiopia in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Tumo’s tragic death also drew attention to Ethiopian road safety. According to the AFP, Ethiopia has one of the world’s highest road fatalities, with 114 deaths per 10,000 vehicles. According to investigators, Tumo was riding in the bus that reportedly lost its wheel, and hit a wall.   Tumo is survived by his wife and four children.
