This is one shocking piece of historical artwork.
It is entitled Abyssinian tribesmen attack the fort at Gura in 1875 .

This piece is inaccurate in many ways. First the date was wrong. This battle happened in 1876 on this date on March 7th in which Emperor Yohannes defeated the Egyptian expansionists that occupied the Fort at Gura which is today in Eritrea.

But let’s discuss the artist, Cecil Langley Doughty .

Doughty, who was born in 1913, was a British comics artist and illustrator, best known for his work in the comic Knockout and the educational weekly Look and Learn.

Doughty developed a respected reputation in which Wikipedia cites sources that states “he proved to be one of the papers most successful historical illustrators” at Look and Learn.

Certainly Ethiopians reviewing this one illustration would definitely disagree.

Doughty passed away on October 26, 1985 at the age of 71.
