Milestone Moment in American Ethiopianism
—Today is the 101th Anniversary of the the establishment of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA)
— On this date in 1914, renown back-to-Africa proponent Marcus Garvey, with future wife Amy Ashwood, hosted what was the first meeting for the formation of the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Kingston, Jamaica.
The milestone meeting would produce an organization that by 1920 had over 1,900 divisions in more than 40 countries. In August 1920, it would adopt the Universal Ethiopian Anthem.
Citing the Dictionary of Race and Ethnic Relations by Ernest Cashmore:
“One of the most vivid expression of Ethiopianism came in the 1920s with the Universal Negro Improvement Association(UNIA under the leadership of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, whose slogan “Africa for the Africans” captured the philosophy of the movement.”
