“Ethiopianism is the concept that transcends personal, tribal, and regional loyalties. It is the belief held by the Ethiopian who thinks in terms of the people as a whole…. To him what matters is not his loyalty to one person, religious or tribal groups, but to the development of the people, as a whole. To him, the leader or the government is but the agent for carrying out the development and reforms needed to lessen the misery of the population.”

“The slave “trade” was a demographic curse that bled Ethiopia dry. Ethiopian blood runs through the veins of many an Arab, Indian, Iranian, Turk, etc. Ethiopia was the favorite hunting ground of slaves to provide the insatiable need of the Arab and Ottoman worlds for their harems, bureaucracy, army, and menial jobs. And then was Bilal, the first muzeen in the Islamic religion, who was born of an Ethiopian slave mother.”

Ethiopian born Irish actress Ruth Negga is making news again and there is now talk of an Oscar!
.
According to Entertainment weekly, Negga and co-star Jeff Nichols’ “play the real-life Virginia couple Mildred and Richard Loving, who in 1958 were arrested in their bedroom for the crime of matrimony. Mildred was black and Richard was white — and that was indeed illegal at the time. And, in fact, it remained so until 1967, when the Lovings changed that, taking their case all the way to the Supreme Court. In a unanimous decision by the justices, the couple’s arrest was ruled unlawful, along with all state prohibitions against interracial marriage.” (May 16 2016)

“Black Zion by David Jenkins(Wildwood Pres. 1975) is a clear exposition of the various manifestations of Ethiopianism since the early slave days, showing how they are sometimes purely religious. This may be read in conjunction with Black Exodus by Edwin S. Redkey(Yale University Press, 1969) which covers much the same ground, but gives more emphasis to the american movements, particularly southern slave rebellions, such as Nat Turner`s.`

Let There Be Peace
By Lemn Sissay
.
So frowns fly away like albatross
And skeletons foxtrot from cupboards,
So war correspondents become travel show presenters
And magpies bring back lost property,
Children, engagement rings, broken things.
.
Let there be peace
So storms can go out to sea to be
Angry and return to me calm,
So the broken can rise up and dance in the hospitals.
Let the aged Ethiopian man in the grey block of flats
Peer through his window and see Addis before him,
So his thrilled outstretched arms become frames
For his dreams.
.
Let there be peace
Let tears evaporate to form clouds, cleanse themselves
And fall into reservoirs of drinking water.
Let harsh memories burst into fireworks that melt
In the dark pupils of a child’s eyes
And disappear like shoals of silver darting fish,
And let the waves reach the shore with a
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
